The most common cockroach in this area is the german cockroach. Since
cockroaches need food, moisture, and undisturbed areas in which to hide, the best control
is prevention through sanitation. Thorough cleaning will make it more difficult for them to
thrive; for example, garbage should be put in tightly closed containers and if possible kept
outdoors. A careful watch for cockroaches, especially egg capsules on groceries or other
merchandise, will help prevent invasion. Proper maintenance of screens on doors and
windows will deter entry of outdoor-living cockroaches.
Where good sanitation or exclusion of cockroaches is not feasible, the skilled use of
insecticides will achieve control. It is important to remember that unskilled use of
insecticides can make the situation worse by scattering cockroaches into previously
uninfested areas. This is most likely to happen when using irritating or strong smelling
products which repel the insects.
There are no short cuts to effective pest control for cockroaches. Results are
dependent on the cockroaches contacting the insecticide, and the efforts of the pest
control technician must be directed at this goal. A combination of well placed surface
treatments and crack and crevice treatment will provide effective control under most
circumstances.
