BEDBUGS
Bedbugs, until a few years ago, were believed to be eradicated
in the United States in the 1960's. However, globalization and a
curtailed use of pesticides have caused a resurgence of these
blood-sucking insects that can range in size from a poppy seed to a
tick. They now can be found in dorm rooms, nursing homes, hotels,
and even your home.
Bedbugs are nocturnal parasites that cause mosquito
bite-like welts and are showing up in increasing numbers.
Travelers are the most common victims of bedbugs, waking up
with mysterious, itchy, red welts and then unwittingly carrying the
insects back home in their luggage and clothing.
Bedbugs rate high on the "ugh!" scale even though there is no
evidence they transmit disease and are not related to a lack of
cleanliness. Hotel rooms are the most common place to pick up these
hitch-hikers.
Here are a few tips the next time you are traveling.
Because bedbugs feed at night, the most likely places to find
them are the mattress and box springs. Pull back the
bedspread and sheets and inspect the mattress seams,
particularly at the corners, for stains or spots (defecation),
molted skins, or the flat, brown, oval-shaped bug itself.
Other hiding places include the bed board, nightstands, and
carpeted edges where the floor meets the wall close to the
bed. You should place luggage on a metal rack or hard
surface, keeping it off the floor and bed. And if you do wake
up with itchy bites, you can reduce the chances of bringing
the bedbugs into your home by vacuuming your suitcase
and laundering your clothes.
