Carpenter ants are one of the largest ants common to the
United States and are a wood destroying insect. They are
predominantly black with the reproductive carpenter ants having
wings. Carpenter ants differ from termites in that they do not eat
the wood as a food source like termites, they simply nest in the
wood. Due to their high moisture requirements, carpenter ants
usually search out wet and rotting wood. It is very common to find
infestations in rotting window sills, door thresholds, and roofs.
Controlling moisture by replacing all wet and rotted wood with good
sound timber is the best place to start. Treatment strategy is
determined by how long the infestation has existed and the extent
of the infestation.

referred to as slab ants, sweet
ants, pharaoh ants, and red
ants, are the second most
common ant found in homes.
The treatment for this insect
can vary depending on where
the ants are found in or
around the home.
